James Alton Walters was born on 30 October 1879. He was the son of William Walters and Matilda (?).

James Alton Walters married Pearl E. Bernard, daughter of Thomas Oliver Bernard and Judith Elizabeth Ann Morgan, in 1905.1

James Alton Walters appeared in the 1910 census as the head of household on 14 May 1910 at Tunstall, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, USA. Also living in the house was his wife, Pearl E. Bernard, his son, Horace Anderson Walters and Theresa Odell Walters. He was listed as James A. Walters, age unreadable, married once for 5 years, born in Virginia, as were his parents. His occupation was unreadable.1

James Alton Walters appeared in the 1920 census as the head of household on 9 January 1920 at Danville, Independent City, Virginia, USA. Also living in the house was his wife, Pearl E. Bernard, his son, Horace Anderson Walters, Herman Edwin Walters and James Walters, his daughter, Black Walters. He was listed as James Walters,age 37, married, born in Virginia. His parents were also born in Virginia. His occupation was something to do with corn (mostly unreadable).2

James Alton Walters died on 24 March 1920 at Danville, Independent City, Virginia, at age 40.
